Riley McGree makes comments to Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick’s ears following a 3-2 win against Doncaster.

Riley McGree was among the scorers as Middlesbrough defeated League Two Doncaster Rovers in a thrilling eight-goal contest at the Eco-Power Stadium. Riley McGree said Middlesbrough should have scored more than five goals against Doncaster on Saturday, but he was pleased with the overall effort.

McGree put Boro up 3-2 after sloppy defending cost them the advantage. Michael Carrick said after the game that he was delighted with Boro’s aggressive play but thought it was clumsy at times, a sentiment mirrored by McGree.

“There were many positives to take. It was nice to win and score a few goals, but there are many areas we need to work on and improve in the next two games.

Before the season began, he stated, “There was some really slick attacking football.” We created a lot of chances and maybe should have had more in the end, but we’re glad to leave with a win and some solid performance. “We’ll take it in stride moving forward.”

McGree had a rough 2023/24 season due to several injuries, which limited him to only 14 league starts. After missing the final eight games of the season as Boro attempted an implausible late drive for the play-offs, he expressed his excitement to get back on the scoresheet.

Boro made it three wins from three with their triumph on Saturday, and McGree took the opportunity to thank his teammates and the club staff for their efforts in preparing for the upcoming season.

“It’s pre-season so it’s bound to be hard work,” he informed us. “But, truly, full kudos to all of the players and the coaching staff. We’ve been working really hard, and we’re still one or two weeks away, so we’ll keep working hard and building on what we’ve done and what we have right now to continue to grow.”
