Almost everyone anticipated the San Diego Padres would be major players at this year’s trade deadline. They have one of baseball’s most aggressive general managers, AJ Preller, who has already completed two major moves in 2024 and has long been linked to top players such as Garrett Crochet. Logically, one would assume it suggests the Padres were really going for it at the deadline this year.
However, with several commentators hinting that the Padres could show more discipline than you would assume, San Diego beat writer AJ Cassavell dashed cold water on Padres supporters’ optimism when he termed the Padres “light buyers”
Padres Rumors: San Diego will be less busy at the trade deadline than previously projected.
Cassavell admits that the Padres require another starting pitcher and at least one additional bullpen arm. However, trading for Garrett Crochet has become even more difficult now that he is demanding a contract extension if his team wants him to pitch in the playoffs this season. When you combine that with the Tigers’ likelihood of keeping Tarik Skubal, you get a trade market with few star names.
Not to mention, the Padres paid a high price to acquire Rays reliever Jason Adam on Sunday morning. This might drastically limit what they can accomplish between now and Tuesday evening.

San Diego traded for Dylan Cease just before the season, and he is currently on a historic tear. In addition, Preller successfully completed a transfer for Luis Arráez in May. Arraez has cooled down and is injured, but it was an aggressive move at the time, and the front staff deserves credit for what they have already accomplished with the squad.
Cassavell also isn’t ruling out the possibility of the Padres making deals. However, a rental starter, such as Jack Flaherty,
Instead of the splashy moves that fans have grown to expect, San Diego acquires one of many non-closer relievers, such as the Angels’ Luis Garcia.
