Prior to the tournament’s opening contest in France, the Golden State Warriors shooter experienced an attack of anxiety.
Stephen Curry, an NBA veteran of nearly a decade with the Golden State Warriors, made his Olympic debut in Paris.
Despite his previous professional experience, Curry faced significant pressure ahead of their first game against Team Serbia and Nikola Jokic.
Curry shared his joy and concerns about representing his country on the global stage for the first time, the latter of which hasn’t come up in his professional life until now.
“I had a lot of nerves pre-game up until the national anthem,” Curry says.
“The environment was incredibly wonderful, sold out to the nosebleeds, and the vibe was amazing.
“I’ve been looking forward to wearing this shirt at this level for a long time. I am enjoying every moment, from the opening ceremonies to the games. You see me so animated because I am enjoying it and want to have something to show for it in the end.”
Curry has not been able to play in an Olympic Games previously.
Curry had previously represented Team USA at the senior level in the 2010 and 2014 World Championship games, but the Olympics had always eluded him.
This time, the stars aligned, allowing him to wear the Team USA jersey on the biggest stage. Curry and his club are much favored.
They expect to win gold this year, and their performance in the Olympic opener suggests they are on course to do it.
However, there are questions about Joel Embiid, who struggled against Serbia, with some observers claiming he has yet to fully recover from the injury that hampered his NBA season.
Some believe the Philadelphia 76ers rushed him back for the playoffs, causing his physical condition to worsen.
