Wolves have begun talks with Burnley about signing defender Maxime Esteve, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Gary O’Neil’s side lost captain Max Kilman earlier this summer when he joined West Ham United and former boss Julen Lopetegui for £40 million, and they are now seeking for a replacement.
However, they will face heavy competition to sign the 22-year-old centre-back this summer, with Romano reporting that it is a “open race” right now.
Wolves Make Contact To Sign Maxime Esteve
Several Premier League clubs are interested.
After losing Kilman from his squad, O’Neil is short on options in the centre of defence, and Frenchman Esteve has surfaced as a target.
According to Romano, Esteve’s move is “one to watch” as several
Premier League clubs are considering a move for the Burnley defender to bolster their squads, though they have not yet been named. So far this summer, Wolves have signed Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima, Tommy Doyle permanently, and Jorgen Strand Larsen on loan from Celta Vigo in Spain. Several first-team players, notably Daniel Podence, Fabio Silva, and centre-back Yerson Mosquera, have returned following loan spells away last season. Esteve was a regular for the Clarets in the 2023/24 season, making 16 appearances after joining in January, however he was unable to prevent their relegation to the Championship.
However, his performances demonstrated enormous promise, which would explain why a plethora of clubs are looking to bring him in, with Burnley likely to be in need of raising funds after suffering relegation to the Championship at the first attempt. Wolves have also been linked with a move for Porto defender David Carmo, who has been described as the Portuguese Van Dijk in the past.

While the team looks to sign a new defender to replace their captain, they may also need to find a method to strengthen their front line if star player Pedro Neto leaves.
The Portugal international has piqued the interest of Tottenham and Arsenal this summer, with Spurs prioritizing a forward who can play across the front line, according to Michael Bridge.
Wolves are demanding £60 million to let the 24-year-old leave the club, which has deterred potential suitors thus far. However, as the deadline approaches, it’s likely that an agreement will be reached to assist fund new arrivals for O’Neil.
