SAD NEWS : San Diego Padres just confirm the passing of their key player after

Sean Burroughs, the former San Diego Padres infielder and the team’s first pick in the 1998 amateur draft, has passed away at the age of 43, according to reports on Friday.

Burroughs collapsed and died on Thursday while coaching his son’s Little League team, as reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Further details are currently unavailable.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner confirmed that an individual named Sean Burroughs, sharing the same birth date as the former MLB player, died at 5:34 p.m. on Thursday at a location on the 4500 block of East 23rd Street in Long Beach. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Burroughs initially gained recognition as a standout slugger and pitcher with a Long Beach team that reached the Little League World Series in 1992 and 1993. He continued his impressive performance at Long Beach Wilson High School, leading to his selection by the Padres as the ninth overall pick in the 1998 draft.

He made his MLB debut with the Padres in 2002 and became a regular player for the team during the 2003 season. After spending four years with San Diego, Burroughs played one season each with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Minnesota Twins. His final major league game took place in 2012.

Beyond his MLB career, Burroughs was also part of the 2000 USA Olympic team, which won a Gold Medal in Sydney, Australia.
