Portsmouth have made a statement signing as they make their second-tier debut after a successful League One promotion campaign last season.
Matt Ritchie, who has been at Newcastle United since June 2016, has re-signed for Pompey. The 34-year-old made 215 appearances for the Tyneside club, having previously played 142 for Bournemouth.
Having progressed through the Portsmouth junior system, this is a welcome return for the Scotland international, who brings much-needed experience to the recently promoted Championship team. Despite being a Hampshire product, Ritchie only made eleven appearances for his hometown club before being traded to Swindon Town in January 2011.
Newcastle released Ritchie this summer as the club seeks to expand both domestically and internationally, as well as in ambition. The winger, who can play in most parts of the ground, has signed to a two-year contract with Portsmouth, and manager John Mousinho has immediately praised his new signing.

Matt has several seasons of experience at this level, having been promoted from the Championship a couple of times. “It’s one of those additions that will bring a significant boost throughout the club since he’s a wonderful player in excellent physical shape. “We’re thrilled to have him here.”
