During the 2019 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals believed they had struck gold when they finally acquired a quarterback with a promising future on the professional level in the form of Oklahoma Sooners standout Kyler Murray.
Despite his tiny frame and height of 5’10”, the Cardinals were sure that they had chosen the proper guy to lead them back to NFC postseason contention. He was nearly unstoppable at the University of Oklahoma, where he earned the Heisman Trophy in 2018. Although Murray’s first season in Arizona was forgettable, the young quarterback began to flourish and rapidly became one of the finest quarterbacks in the game, with the ability to devastate opposing defenses through the air.
And in the ground game. Murray proceeded to two consecutive Pro Bowls and appeared to make the Cardinals relevant again until injuries hit.
Fortunately for Arizona, Murray is healthy entering the 2024 season, but head coach Jonathan Gannon will not play his star quarterback during the NFL preseason, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Murray has had his fair share of injury issues during his career, so there’s no reason to jeopardize his health with meaningless contests ahead of Week 1. Murray and his teammates will travel to Highmark Stadium on September 8 to face the Buffalo Bills in Week 1, which will be a difficult first test for the Cardinals.
