The Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers have not reached an agreement to move wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to Pittsburgh, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Wednesday.
According to Schultz, the Steelers and 49ers are still discussing a potential deal. Andrew Fillipponi of Pittsburgh’s 937 The Fan earlier reported that the Steelers have “a verbal agreement in place” to trade Aiyuk.
According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, the Steelers are one of four teams that the 49ers have given Aiyuk permission to negotiate a new contract with. The other three are the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, and Washington Commanders.
On Monday, Maiocco reported that the Browns and Patriots had “negotiated the framework” of a possible deal for Aiyuk.
The Patriots had stepped out of the running for the star wideout, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, after the organisation “decided not to explore any further trade possibilities with the 49ers.”
Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport then claimed that the Steelers were in talks with the 49ers about Aiyuk as of midday Tuesday.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin contributed to the notion Wednesday, smiling after being asked if the team was looking to add to their receiving room.
“I’ll let you guys speculate on that,” Tomlin remarked.
The Steelers may still be pursuing Aiyuk in the hopes of adding another target for anticipated starting quarterback Russell Wilson, but it appears that more work is needed to secure the receiver.
That job might include negotiating a new contract with Aiyuk, who has allegedly requested an extension that includes a rise from the $14.1 million basic salary he is currently slated to get in 2024.
Aiyuk is entering his sixth NFL season, having recorded a career-high 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns with the 49ers last season. If Cleveland or Pittsburgh make a trade for him, he is likely to become a top receiver.
