Winston-Salem, North Carolina (AP) Wake Forest has announced the death of Len Chappell, a former basketball all-American and NBA All-Star.
The school reports that Chappell, 77, died on Thursday. Friday’s notification had no information about the cause of death.
The 6-foot-8 Chappell guided the Demon Deacons to two Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championships and the school’s sole Final Four appearance in 1962. He became the school’s first unanimous all-American. He was also named the ACC Player of the Year in 1961 and 1962. Chappell was the fourth choice in the 1962 NBA draft and spent nine seasons in the league, collecting over 5,600 points. While playing for the New York Knicks in 1964, he became the first Demon Deacon to be named to an NBA All-Star Game.
The school retired Chappell’s jersey number.
