Over the weekend, something flashy and brilliant caused quite a buzz on Cape Cod, much to the pleasure of hockey lovers in Massachusetts.
The Stanley Cup, owned by the NHL, was the valuable present given to the NHL by Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston. But instead of the black and gold of Boston Bruins supporters, the colours around it were the red, blue, and purple of a few Panthers programs that were close to a Western Mass hockey family.
This past weekend, the Cup was in the Bay State thanks to Massachusetts. and his son P.J. bringing it home to enjoy a moment with the most coveted sports trophy among loved ones. Both of the Fentons are part of the Florida Panthers, the Stanley Cup champions.
Paul, a Springfield native and star player for the Cathedral High School Panthers hockey team before moving to Boston to play for BU as a Terrier, is the Senior Advisor to the General Manager of the Panthers. After that, he played for the Whalers, Rangers, Kings, Jets, Maple Leafs, Flames, and Sharks throughout his protracted NHL career in the 1980s and early 1990s. Prior to moving to Florida in 2020, he held executive positions with the Ducks, Wild, and Predators following his playing career.
P.J., also a former Cathedral standout, went on to star for four years at UMass-Amherst before embarking on a professional career of his own, which started off with the Worcester Sharks of the AHL and wrapped up overseas in 2016. P.J. is currently a scout with Panthers, which won the Stanley Cup in late-June after beating the Oilers four games to three. The festivities were held at Captain’s Golf Course in Brewster, Mass., where dozens of friends and family members attended from all corners of the state. As is tradition with the world’s most iconic trophy, Cup-winners drink their beverage of choice out of the top of the trophy, a challenge the Fenton clan took head on.
