BREAKING NEWS : Boston Bruins 3 Best Contracts for 2024-25

What are the top three contracts for the Bruins in 2024-25? Currently, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney has $8.6 million in cap room for the 2024-25 season; however, we all know where that money will most likely end up: free-agent goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman. We hope so, at least.

When looking at the Bruins’ existing contracts, some stand out as outstanding, while others are poor. Last week, we looked at some of the worst contracts on the books for the Black and Gold, and one of them includes a newcomer who will need a bounce-back season to justify his large new contract. Let’s look at the three greatest Boston contracts for the next season.

Mason Lohrei is a young individual. Mason Lohrei is set to break out full-time in the NHL on a third pairing this season following a strong finish to the regular season and playoffs the year before. The former Ohio State standout is now poised to have an 82-game impact after Boston allowed Matt Grzelcyk and Derek Forbort walk in free agency for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks, respectively.

Lohrei is still on his entry-level contract, which has a $925,000 cap cost and is relatively team-friendly for a blueliner who will almost certainly play more than 20 minutes per game when everything is said and done. Lohrei, a skilled puck-moving defenceman with much of scoring talent, is a promising breakout prospect this season.

Morgan Geekie
Last summer, Morgan Geekie signed a two-year, $4 million contract with the Bruins after the Seattle Kraken extended him a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent. In his debut season wearing the Spoked-B, he set career highs with 17 goals, 22 assists, and 39 points.

It’s unclear where Geekie will finish up this season, but he gives coach Jim Montgomery options by playing both centre and wing, and it wouldn’t be strange to see him start the season on the second line at right wing if Georgii Merkulov or Fabian Lysell don’t work out. If they do, a bottom-six position would be an excellent fit for Geekie.

Brandon Carlo
You could be thinking, ‘Brandon Carlo’s contract?’ Yes, the experienced defenseman checks many of the boxes for what the Bruins can do on the back end. Carlo, a key penalty-killer, is the team’s fourth highest-paid defenseman, after Charlie McAvoy, Nikita Zadorov, and Hampus Lindholm, earning $4.1 million.

Last season, he followed a 2022-23 season in which he finished with a plus/minus of plus-44 and a plus-23 while spending a significant amount of time each night on the penalty kill. Carlo, a classic stay-at-home defenseman, has three years remaining on his contract with a $4.1 million AAV that is looking better by the season.

There are other Bruins with contracts that may be ranked among the finest for the 2024-25 season, but these three represent the best value for what Boston receives from them, and all will be major players this season.
