The stalemate between the New England Patriots and Matthew Judon has ended. In exchange for the linebacker, the Atlanta Falcons will get a third-round draft pick.
The 31-year-old Judon looked for a new deal because his current one, which he signed in 2021, was about to expire at the end of the 2024 campaign. But in the midst of a rebuilding project led by future quarterback Drake Maye and head coach Jerod Mayo, New England’s management was unwilling to spend in an experienced player.
Over the course of three seasons in Foxborough, the pass rusher amassed 32 sacks and 33 tackles for loss while playing for the Patriots. He was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 114 games, 82 of which as a starter. Over his career, he has racked up 369 tackles, 66.5 sacks, and nine forced fumbles.

Judon will take on a significant role as one of the team’s starting outside linebackers in the defensive lineup as soon as he arrives in Atlanta. Alongside Lorenzo Carter, he will play a crucial role in the defense’s 3-4 scheme that defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake and head coach Raheem Morris have designed.
