A 20-year-old man died while hiking in Yosemite National Park last week, officials said.

Matt Mullen, 20, was enjoying his day off as a camp worker with coworkers at the California national park at the time, according to a statement from the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

 

“Matt Mullen, an assistant cook in the Camp Mather kitchen, lost his life on Thursday, Aug. 8, in a tragic accident during a day off with co-workers in Yosemite National Park,” according to a department spokeswoman.

Matt had been working for the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department for the second summer, although the department stressed that the incident did not take place during work hours or on their grounds.

Yosemite National Park’s spokeswoman stated that the event is now being investigated and that “we are not able to provide any further information at this time,” according to SFGate.

A 7-year-old girl who went missing while camping with her grandparents was found safe after a fisherman heard her cries for help.
Grief counsellors supported campers who were devastated by Mullen’s death, according to a representative for the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department. They will also offer aid to his coworkers through the Employee aid Program.

According to Camp Mather, the family camp was constructed in the 1920s near Hetch Hetchy Valley. It is located close to Yosemite National Park. “The camp is beloved by many as an off-the-grid refuge from city life and is a treasure for generations of SF families,” according to a description.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department website lists a picturesque excursion to the national park as one of the activities available.

A 20-year-old college student died last month after tumbling down Yosemite National Park’s Half Dome. She was descending the renowned peak with her father when the catastrophe happened.
