No one expected Russell Westbrook to shatter Oscar Robertson’s triple-double record back in 2017. Years later, however, the Milwaukee Bucks legend has come out to defend the Denver Nuggets guard in the face of widespread hatred. Robertson has sharply criticised the Los Angeles Clippers and other teams for their handling of Westbrook. Also known as The Big O, the Bucks legend revealed his dissatisfaction with how teams have handled Westbrook during his long career.
The NBA icon, a pioneer in player empowerment and one of the greatest all-around players in NBA history, believes Westbrook has been unfairly attacked and scapegoated by multiple organisations. He noted that Westbrook’s effect extends beyond numbers and statistics, as he adds unrivalled energy, leadership, and a winning attitude to every club he plays for. The Clippers’ recent decision to part ways with Westbrook, whom they acquired in a trade, has fuelled Robertson’s wrath. He believes that Los Angeles did Westbrook a disservice by not providing him with an adequate opportunity to contribute and exhibit his unique skill set to the team and its supporters.
He emphasised that Westbrook’s unwavering work ethic and dedication to the game of basketball should be acknowledged and celebrated by the league and its teams. He feels that organisations should seek to build around players like Westbrook rather than dismissing them as soon as things don’t go as planned or when they confront hardship.
Milwaukee Bucks’ Legend Oscar Robertson defends Russell Westbrook against haters. The previous few years have been difficult for Westbrook. In a Sports Illustrated article by Joey Linn, Robertson expressed his support for the former MVP.
“For some strange reason, I don’t know why they want to keep blaming everything that happens on him,” Robertson added. “When he plays, he is dynamic. Gives the team a spark. Then all of a sudden, they don’t care about him or desire him. The Hall of Famer’s forceful statements emphasise the importance of more player-centric decision-making in the NBA, as well as a greater awareness for the intangible traits that superstars like Westbrook bring to
the table. Robertson stated that teams should focus on maximising their players’ abilities rather than continuously criticising and undermining them. Robertson’s passionate defence of Westbrook serves as a reminder that the NBA should respect all players’ contributions, not just statistical superstars. By cultivating an environment of mutual respect and understanding, the league can help its athletes reach their greatest potential while also providing a more meaningful and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
