The Phoenix Mercury and Chicago Sky faced off again in four days, and this time, the Mercury prevailed 86-68 and two players recorded double-doubles that made history! Thank you for reading, and remember to subscribe! Despite her team’s loss, Sky rookie Angel Reese became the fastest player in WNBA history to record 20 double-doubles in a season with her 19 points and 20 rebounds in Phoenix. After grabbing as many rebounds as she could, she finished the game with 10 offensive and 10 defensive rebounds.
Reese is the only member of this year’s draft class to average a double thus far in her rookie season. The LSU product is continuing to push for the WNBA Rookie of the Year title against Indiana Fever standout Caitlin Clark, averaging 13.6 points and 12.3 rebounds per game in 27 games.
Sophie Cunningham, a six-year WNBA veteran, achieved her first double-double with the Mercury with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Cunningham has taken on a starting role in the last three games as Rebecca Allen is out indefinitely, adjusting to the role that she has played sparingly this season. Although her season 3-point percentage is up to 39.8%, she has also displayed glimpses of her defensive ability. In 27 games (11 starts) so far, the Missouri native is averaging 8.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.
Even though forward Monique Billings was only signed by the Mercury on Sunday, it will be intriguing to see who starts going forward.
After the game, Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts remarked, “I think everyone loves Soph because she does pretty much everything that we ask.” “We have some pretty good players that we’ll have options to put in the starting lineup with Bec and now Monique.”
