As we approach 2024, the Texas Longhorns are without a doubt one of the select few teams capable of winning the national championship in the College Football Playoffs. That being said, they haven’t even played a game yet and have already faced their fair share of hardship this fall.
In particular, the running back room injury plague has really bitten Steve Sarkisian’s team hard.
Due to a ruptured LCL/PCL sustained in practice, sophomore CJ Baxter was lost for the year early in August. He took his rookie season experience of 659 yards and five touchdowns with him.
A week later, rookie Christian Clark, one of the running backs anticipated to take up in Baxter’s absence, suffered an Achilles tear that ended his season.
Texas had a glut of running backs in the class of 2024; a week later, there were just three scholarship running backs left. With only 11 days remaining before the season begins, Sarkisian stated that his crew is still working to find a solution for that issue.
“There is undoubtedly a location that we can use. Once more, at this point in the game, transfers are typically not typical; instead, they may be graduate transfers or something similar. Thus, we’re sort of considering all of our choices there,” Sarkisian said the press (via Dan Morrison of On3).
After rushing 65 times for 398 yards last season, junior Jaydon Blue is now the team’s most seasoned rusher.
plus three touchdowns. Quintrevion Wisner, a sophomore, and Jerrick Gibson, a freshman, are also included in the team.
There is unquestionably a need for the Longhorns, but Sarkisian and his staff are also free to be selective. Remember, this is a championship-caliber roster.
“We simply do not want to take a body,” Sarkisian clarified. “We are considering all options if there is someone who can assist us in any way, whether it be in a small or large role.”
