Charlton Athletic signed 24-year-old Edwards from Dunfermline this summer, making him Nathan Jones’ third signing of the window since June of this year. After making almost 200 appearances for the Pars, Edwards was signed by the League One club for an undisclosed amount, bringing an end to his five-year spell in Fife.
He started Charlton Athletic’s season-opening home game against Leyton Orient. However, there were serious concerns when Edwards had to be stretchered off in the first half following a late challenge by Sean Clare.
Nathan Jones was instantly concerned about Edwards’ challenge, and he believed it would have received a “straight red” if VAR had been implemented in the English Football League.
However, despite Edwards’ appearance in a protective boot, a long-term injury is unlikely. According to London News Online, the initial scans were not as awful as predicted.
The Charlton Athletic defender is anticipated to be sidelined for several weeks rather than months, according to reports. An opportunity for other players
Thierry Small seemed to have staked his claim for the starting role at Charlton Athletic’s left wing-back position after replacing Edwards in the 24th minute. Small signed a permanent contract with the Addicks in January of this year after being recalled by Southampton from his loan spell at St Mirren. The 20-year-old started all 14 games he played last season and appears to be at the top of the left wing back queue when Edwards returns.
Although it appears that the Scotsman won the initial competition for a starting berth at the start of the season, Small’s injury may potentially give him an advantage.
If he can replicate his performance from last season, Jones may have a difficult time making a decision when Edwards returns. Dealing with Absence
After going 14 games unbeaten with five wins under Jones at the close of last season, it appears like the absence of new starting wing-back Edwards will not be a major issue for Charlton Athletic.
Despite being lost on the loan market with Southampton last season, it appears that the South London club has provided Small a spot to finally play consistent games.
Edwards seems to be a high-quality defender,
Charlton should stay strong at the left back position, as the injury appears to be short-term.
When he eventually recovers, Charlton Athletic might become a formidable force down the left flank. With two victories from two in League One this season, The Valley is prepared for an interesting season.
