The Welsh club could move up to the second tier of English soccerAs Wrexham AFC aims for a third consecutive promotion this season, two of the club’s standout players have revealed a surprising reward they’d like from owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney if they achieve their goal. After the Hollywood duo purchased the Welsh club in early 2021, Wrexham has experienced a remarkable ascent, climbing from the National League to League One in just two seasons. Now, the team is eyeing a promotion to the Championship for the first time in over two decades. Wrexham stars Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee, who were both integral to the team’s success last season, were recently named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year.
While visiting a Professional Footballers’ Association function in Manchester, the duo was asked how they wanted Reynolds and McElhenney to thank them if they achieved another promotion this season.
Mullin joked about a less glamorous but equally memorable destination: “Back to Butlins, we’ll go to Butlins this time so that everyone stops speaking about it.”This light-hearted comment was a tribute to the team’s much-publicized celebratory excursion to Las Vegas earlier this summer, a reward from their Hollywood owners for securing promotion to League Two.
Wrexham’s plans for the next season
Despite the light-hearted suggestion, Mullin remained serious about the team’s goals for the 2024-25 season.
“Just to go out and continue doing what we’ve been doing for the last three years,” Mullin told SPORTbible.
“We have to go out and make this town proud. Continue to do so, and maybe the results will follow. Just keep doing what we’re doing and be happy about it.
Wrexham is off to a solid start in League One, with four points from their first two games, and they are among the favourites to be promoted to the Championship.
With a team full of seasoned players and the ongoing support of their celebrity owners, the club’s incredible journey shows no signs of slowing.
Whether it’s a vacation to Las Vegas or a trip to Butlins, one thing is certain: if Wrexham wins a third consecutive promotion, Reynolds and McElhenney will need to find a unique method to celebrate their team’s continuous success.
