Luton Town have parted ways with midfielder Louie Watson, who agreed to end his contract by mutual consent.
The 23-year-old, who joined the Hatters in July 2022 under former boss Nathan Jones, has been declared surplus to requirements by the club, which has had a disastrous start to the current season.
After coming from Derby County, current manager Rob Edwards gave the former West Ham trainee his full Championship debut in a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town on January 1, 2023. Watson made nine appearances that season, helping Luton to a successful Premier League promotion before being loaned out to League One club Charlton Athletic.
During his stint at Charlton, the former Republic of Ireland youth international made 27 appearances and scored once. However, he fell out of favour with previous Luton manager Jones after February 10 and did not appear in any of the club’s pre-season games when he returned to Kenilworth Road.
Louie will have to try to get his football elsewhere this season. We had that chat from the beginning of preseason, and that is the circumstance,” Edwards said. With the transfer window being closed, Watson is free to sign with a new club as a free agent.
Luton Town announced on their website that they have reached an agreement with Louie Watson to release the midfielder from his contract by mutual consent. The 23-year-old was bought from Derby County in the summer of 2022 and made nine appearances in the 22/23 season before being loaned to Charlton Athletic last season. We would like to thank Louie for his contributions to our promotion to the Premier League and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
In addition to his club career, Watson earned a few caps for England U15 in friendlies against the United States before moving on to play for the Republic of Ireland at U18 level. In March 2021, he made his Republic of Ireland U21 debut, playing 73 minutes in a 2-1 away win over Wales. He made five appearances for the U21 side.BR
