The Florida Gators began their 2024 season with a terrible 41-17 loss to rivals Miami, which was made worse by the fact that it took place in The Swamp.
Following the game, head coach Billy Napier stated that his squad needed to focus on developing rather than on the fan base’s disappointment.
“We need to get to work on the football part,” he told reporters Monday. “We have to improve our consistency and execution. And if we can focus on those things rather than what some guy in his basement in rural central Florida is posting on social media, we might be able to improve.”
Napier admitted that the team and his own coaching were not immune to criticism.
“Sometimes you deserve criticism, you know?” he said. “And I believe that is one of the things for which I would make no excuses, correct? So we need to go get it fixed.”
Florida will next face FCS Samford before a difficult home game against Texas A&M in two weeks, which is still reeling after a 23-13 loss to Notre Dame the previous weekend.
