Peterborough chief reveals how much Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds spent this summer after chat with Wrexham CEO

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds backed Wrexham strongly during the most recent transfer window.

The Hollywood owners have not been bashful about splurging the cash in Wales, particularly during the 2024 summer transfer window. Following promotion to League One, Phil Parkinson was able to sign eight new first-team players this summer.

The huge expenditure began last month, when Ollie Rathbone left Rotherham for Wrexham in a £500,000 deal that was, for a few weeks, the club’s highest-ever investment on a player.

That record was broken on August 30th, when Wrexham announced the acquisition of West Bromwich Albion striker Modou Faal on a three-year contract. How much Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny spent since takeover to help Wrexham get promoted

Faal cost the Red Dragons £590,000, which is currently their new transfer record, rapidly exceeding the amount paid for Rathbone earlier this month. How much Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds spend in Wrexham this summer?
In addition to the aforementioned two, Arthur Okonkwo, George Dobson, Callum Burton, Dan Scarr, Lewis Brunt, and Sebastian Revan have all relocated to the Racecourse Ground in recent months.

But how much did all of these new acquisitions set Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds back?

Darragh MacAnthony, Peterborough United’s chairman, has officially announced the sum.

Speaking live on talkSPORT, the Peterborough manager described a chat he had with Wrexham’s CEO, during which he was told how much the Welsh club spent this summer.Fans of Wrexham display a flag of their badge with a banner of owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds during the Sky Bet League Two match between ...

He stated, “Peterborough are the second highest spenders in League One this summer; I believe we spent over £2.1 million on transfer fees, while Birmingham obviously spent millions more.

“But following that, I was speaking with the Wrexham CEO on Saturday, and he said they spent roughly £1.4 million, so I believe they are third. However, we then look at the vast bulk of agreements, which are free signings and loan deals.

“Yes, there’s been a bit of business in the Championship but League One, League 2, there hasn’t been a massive outlay in transfer fees.” Wrexham should no longer be blamed for spending.
It is understandable that fans of lower-league clubs were dissatisfied when their new owners came over in 2021.

Wrexham were not even in League Two, but they were able to acquire major names like Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer, both of whom dropped down the football pyramid to join the club.

While the players provided football-related reasons for their decision to relocate, there will always be some doubt that it was for financial gain.

However, now that Wrexham are in League One, they are nowhere close

Being the largest spenders in the division, they should no longer be portrayed as a team that pays outrageous sums for stars. That role should instead belong to Birmingham City, who are likely to pay Fulham about £20 million to recruit Jay Stansfield.
