Steve Evans on Mallik Wilks’ unjust reputation as Huddersfield Town rue refereeing calls

STEVE EVANS, who previously managed Leeds United, can vouch to Mallik Wilks’ abilities, and he was relieved not to be on the receiving end of them against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
The recent Rotherham United acquisition demonstrated why the Millers’ manager was so eager to bring him to the club from Sheffield Wednesday, capped off by scoring the type of goal for which he is known throughout his career.

Evans remarked of Wilks, who also received a dubious penalty, “The boy has worked so hard for us in the last 10 days.” He arrived here with the reputation of not working hard, but let me assure you that Mallik Wilks works hard.Loving touch for Mallik Wilks as winger joins Rotherham United from Sheffield Wednesday

I’ve watched him score once for the youth squad, and I was the one who approved his first professional contract with Leeds United. I’ve seen him do that as a child.
“I used to call him ‘S*d Wilks’ and other less nice names. When I’d hop on the coach and go into my office. He has done that against me for Hull, especially with Grant McCann.

Town had a difficult afternoon, as they were subjected to numerous harsh rulings, including Danny Ward’s dismissal and a cheap penalty conceded by the visitors.

Andy Quy, the goalkeeping coach, was eventually terminated for his protestations, and an enraged Michael Duff was sent off after the game.

Assistant manager Martin Paterson said, “We believe the key decisions were probably incorrect.

“We do not believe it is a penalty. A player passes through the box, wraps his leg around our player, and falls.

“It looks a soft penalty to us and something we are going to have to swallow.”
