The Washington Commanders’ defence was the subject of much speculation leading up to their regular-season debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The presence of head coach Dan Quinn’s better schematic principles and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.’s motivating approaches provided reason for optimism. However, based on initial perceptions, their efforts may take some time to yield results.

After a closer look at the game footage, not many Commanders defenders gloated. Going into the game, there were high expectations for potential second-year defensive back Quan Martin. It was only one game, but the former second-round pick failed to live up to higher expectations.

Dyami Brown

Martin was sluggish against the run and appeared lost in coverage support. He played 92 percent of the team’s defensive snaps, although his Pro Football Focus grade of 46.0 accurately reflected his entire impact.

The Commanders have plenty of alternatives in their safety room. Benching Martin after one game appears implausible, but it becomes more likely if the current trend continues and players like Percy Butler and Tyler Owens continue to grow.

Dyami Brown, Commanders WR
Dyami Brown’s snap percentage increased to 56 percent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This was a significant boost from the 23% he achieved last season, and it served as a reward for his exceptional offseason performance.

Brown was a standout performer this summer. Fans were more interested in seeing what the wide receiver could achieve in a competitive environment. He has no problem flashing throughout camp or the preseason. When the real action begins, the former third-round pick faces new challenges.
