German striker that Blackburn Rovers signed for an undisclosed fee was one to forget: View

Semir Telalovic’s brief experience as a Blackburn Rovers player ended quietly this summer, and it’s fair to say the 24-year-old underperformed at Ewood Park.

John Dahl Tomasson signed the German-born striker from German giants Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2023, signing a three-year contract with Rovers, but his tenure in the Championship proved disappointing.

He left on a permanent basis earlier this summer, just one year into a three-year contract, to join 2. Bundesliga side SSV Ulm, and it was a decision that benefited both sides, with Telalovic failing to break into the Rovers team on a regular basis, despite their poor 2023/24 season.

Overall, Telalovic’s stint at Blackburn will be remembered for his lack of game time and lack of goals when he did play.

Semir Telalovic struggled as a Blackburn Rovers player. Telalovic had spent his whole career in Germany until joining Rovers on deadline day in 2023, and he appeared to be a good addition on paper after impressing for Borussia Mönchengladbach II, even playing a few games for the first squad in the Bundesliga.Gregg Broughton explains Semir Telalovic transfer as Blackburn Rovers end striker search - LancsLive

The youthful striker had appeared three times in the Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach, but it was his 22 goals in 50 games for their reserve team, virtually one every other game, that prompted Rovers to sign him for an undisclosed fee.

After completing his signing, then-Rovers director of football Gregg Broughton told the club’s website: “Semir still has enormous potential to improve. He will add terrific speed, finishing ability, and directness to our forward options.”

However, the Ewood Park faithful never witnessed the aforementioned qualities, as he battled to break into Rovers’ starting lineup, first under Tomasson and subsequently under John Eustace.Blackburn Rovers on X: "🗣️ JDT: "Semir [Telalovic] is a hungry young boy. We're really looking forward to seeing how he can cope with the new league. He scored a hat-trick in

Telalovic appeared on the bench in his first four league games, before being used as an unused replacement and even being left out of the matchday squad for several months.

He made only two league starts, both during the holidays, when the club’s squad depth was tested, and he failed to score.

Telalovic was played sparingly off the bench in the second half of the season, and when he came on, he struggled to make an impression.

In total, the German appeared in 20 games in all competitions, failing to score or assist once, and it was evident he was not in Eustace’s plans for the future.

He left for his homeland in July, and he’ll be regarded as a bust who wasn’t quite good enough to make the Championship, thus Telalovic’s departure from Ewood Park was the right decision.

Fans of Blackburn Rovers may be interested in Semir Telalovic’s performance in the German second division this season, following a disappointing tenure in Lancashire.

So far, Telalovic has yet to score for his new club in five appearances, and he has only started one league game.

The 24-year-old is likely lacking confidence following his season at Blackburn, and he hasn’t scored a competitive goal since May 2023, when he scored a hat-trick for Borussia Mönchengladbach II against Schalke II, though he did have an impressive strike rate for Rovers’ U21 side, scoring five goals in four games.

Perhaps Telalovic just needs one goal for his new team, and he will begin scoring on a regular basis, which would be a setback for Rovers after parting ways with him in the summer.

The 24-year-old will be trying to get his career back on track this season, as well as to show Blackburn that he can score goals after leaving Ewood Park.
