Michigan’s Allen Park (AP) — Jake Fromm, a quarterback, has been signed by the Detroit Lions, providing depth to a position that suffered from Hendon Hooker’s concussion.

Lions coach Dan Campbell stated on Monday night, “We felt like he’s going to be able to pick up the offense pretty fast, enough to be able to go out and help us if need be.”

With only Jared Goff and Nate Sudfeld fit enough to play quarterback, Detroit did not want to go to Kansas City on Saturday night for a preseason game.

Fromm, who is 26 years old, had a 0-2 record in 2021 while starting for the New York Giants. Three months ago, Washington dismissed the former Georgia standout, who was selected by Buffalo in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.Detroit Lions grades: Aidan Hutchinson shines, coaching mishap hurts

Campbell stated, “We needed someone we felt could work in the pocket, and he was fortunately available.” “We’ll see where it goes; he looked pretty good after his workout on Monday.”

After suffering a knee injury that interrupted his college career, Hooker entered his second NFL season with the Lions, aiming to gain much-needed experience.
Playing for the first time in 21 months since tearing a ligament in his left knee as a fifth-year senior for the Tennessee Volunteers, Hooker was wounded in the third quarter of a preseason game last week against the Giants due to a run. He had four carries for 34 yards, including a 16-yard run, and was 5 of 9 for 36 yards.

Detroit drafted Hooker in the third round last year, knowing he would likely not play as a rookie and hoping he would at least develop into a dependable backup.

The defending NFC North champions gave Goff a $212 million, four-year extension in May and will open the regular season at home against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 8 as they look to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.
