Damon Hill: Red Bull in reverse as McLaren and Ferrari ramp up chase of Max Verstappen in Drivers' Championship | F1 News | Sky Sports

“The significance of a victory is everything. “It’s almost like the old saying, the first loser is the guy who comes second,” Hill said on the Sky Sports F1 podcast.”You never want to finish second. When you’re in the thick of things, winning is the only way to go.Red Bull is in reverse. “It’s like gravity is pulling them back down as the championship progresses.”They are literally losing performance since everyone else is increasing their growth and achieving advances that Red Bull cannot match.
“Obviously, you can win a championship by consistently finishing in the points and coming in second place, but that only makes the competition that much more fierce.

“They are managing the slide, if you will, because they need to cross the line at the conclusion of the championship with only one point, and it looks like it will be very, very close given the rate at which Ferrari and McLaren are catching them.

“I think Red Bull will believe they have lost the Constructors’ Championship, especially with Checo’s (Sergio Perez) continuous bad luck.

“I don’t see how they are going to look at bags of points going forward compared to Ferrari and McLaren.”

Even though Red Bull is being “pulled back down,” Hill would rather to be in Verstappen’s position rather than Norris’, and believes that simply maintaining first place is crucial.
Indeed, he feels that if Verstappen can run as fast as possible “without dropping the baby,” he will be able to hold off the risk-takers over his shoulder.”I believe possession accounts for nine-tenths of it. He already has the points, Max, but they are sitting there and watching it eat away,” Hill remarked.

“It is an issue of how quickly the rats consume the cheese.

“They are sitting there anxiously, but they are the ones in command. If you look at it as a race, it’s literally how many tenths of a second they take out of you per lap before you cross the finish line.

“It is preferable to be in the position with points. You can locate something and turn it around to solve their problem and get some profit.

“They are taking advantage of their current situation. When you chase, you have nothing to lose. The appeal of chasing places is that it allows you to take more risks because you are already in second place.I used to think that leading the race was similar to an egg and spoon race. Or let’s see you holding the infant; you can’t drop it. “Move quickly, but don’t lose sight of what’s important.”When you’re chasing, you’re not carrying the baby; you’re like a wolf chasing the guy in front of you.”When you are in the lead, that is the precious thing that everybody is after, you have got it, and you mustn’t drop it.”
