4 things Alabama football fans should know about Georgia before SEC opener

Here are three things to know about the Bulldogs going into Alabama-Georgia on Saturday. Georgia football’s last two losses came against Alabama. The Crimson Tide, ranked fourth, will take on No. 1 Georgia in its first conference game of the 2024 season. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium on ABC. The Bulldogs will be Alabama’s first SEC opponent under Kalen DeBoer, who took over the Crimson Tide following Nick Saban’s retirement.

Georgia football has not lost many games in recent memory. The Bulldogs will carry a streak of 42 regular-season wins to Bryant-Denny Stadium which started Nov. 21, 2020, two weeks after a home loss to Florida.

But in that time, Alabama has gotten the better of Georgia twice: the 2021 and 2023 SEC championship games. In 2021, the Crimson Tide beat the Bulldogs 41-24 in Atlanta, helped by three touchdowns from Bryce Young and an interception returned for a score from Jordan Battle. Alabama went on to lose to Georgia in the College Football Playoff National Championship game Jan. 10, 2022.

In 2023, Alabama kept Georgia out of the College Football Playoff with a 27-24 win in the SEC championship game, which the Bulldogs nearly came back to win with 14 fourth-quarter points.

Alabama has dominated recent rivalry with Georgia

Alabama will take the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium having last beaten the Bulldogs 27-24 in the 2023 SEC championship, but the Crimson Tide’s recent dominance against Georgia extends much further.

Georgia has one win against Alabama since 2008: the 2022 CFP national championship, when the Bulldogs beat the Crimson Tide 33-18 in Indianapolis for the program’s second straight title.

Alabama has beaten Georgia in eight of their past nine meetings, four of which have been decided by a touchdown or less.

Georgia offense does not turn the ball over much

For an offense that has struggled to generate momentum through the first three games of the 2024 season, with the No. 67 total offense and the No. 59 scoring offense in the country that averages 6.9 yards per play, Georgia has not hurt itself in terms of turnovers.

Led by quarterback Carson Beck, who led the SEC in passing yards last season, the Bulldogs have one turnover through three games: a turnover-on-downs to end the first half of a 48-3 win against Tennessee Tech. Georgia has no interceptions nor fumbles through the first three games.

Alabama defense on Georgia offense:Alabama football defense has ‘undivided attention’ on Georgia. What Crimson Tide expects

In three games, nine Georgia players have scored 11 offensive touchdowns including wide receiver Colbie Young and running back Branson Robinson, who are the only players with multiple scores.

According to Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, the Crimson Tide defense had 13 takeaway opportunities against Wisconsin, including two forced fumbles and a turnover on downs. For Wommack’s “swarm” defense, turnovers will continue to be a focal point, especially against a team with a track record for taking care of the football.

Alabama scored the most recent touchdown vs Georgia defense

Alabama will try and be the first offense to score a touchdown against Georgia in 2024.

Through wins against Clemson, Tennessee Tech and Kentucky, the Bulldogs defense allowed six field goals, four of which came in Georgia’s one-point win against the Wildcats in Week 3.

Georgia’s defense has not allowed a touchdown since Dec. 2, 2023, when Alabama beat the Bulldogs in the SEC championship. Former Alabama running back Roydell Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter of the SEC championship was the most recent touchdown Georgia has allowed.
