SUNDERLAND are closing in on signing free agency striker Aaron Connolly. Connolly has been without a club since his release from Hull City in the summer.
The 24-year-old is a nine-time Republic of Ireland international who has lost his way in recent seasons, being loaned out by Brighton before departing the Premier League club in 2023.
Connolly spent half a season on loan at Middlesbrough in 2022, when he scored two league goals in 19 appearances while Chris Wilder was in charge.
Boro decided against making the move permanent, so Connolly traveled to Italy and spent time with Venezia. He then joined Hull on loan, which was extended to permanent status last summer. Despite scoring eight league goals last season, the striker left the MKM Stadium after only one season. Sunderland turned to the free agency market after deadline-day acquisition Ahmed Abdullahi was declared out for up to three months following groin surgery.
With Abdullahi’s injury, Eliezer Mayenda is the club’s lone true striker, however summer signing Wilson Isidor is equally at ease playing up front or off the left wing.
Talks with Connolly are continuing, but as things stand, a settlement is expected.
Increasingly likely.
