The Red Wings get:

The Hawks of Seth Jones acquire:

JT Compher Justin Holl Boston’s third-round selection in 2025

In exchange for two NHL players and a draft selection, Detroit would obtain Jones in what would be a blockbuster transaction. Additionally, it’s an agreement that releases both sides from contracts that are seen negatively.

Jones’s eight-year, $76 million contract is about to start its third year. Despite his struggles to fulfill his contract, the star defenseman is still a reliable player in the NHL. Jones would play defense for the Red Wings in the first or second line. The five-time NHL All-Star scored eight goals and provided 23 assists for 31 points in 67 games during his final season with Chicago.

Detroit would trade two players and a third-round selection in exchange. Compher is a winger who might play in Chicago’s bottom six. He’s about to start the second year of a $25.5 million, five-year contract. Compher had 48 points in 77 games last season with 19 goals and 29 assists.

Holl, on the other hand, was expected to support the Red Wings blue line, but the previous season he had trouble staying in the lineup and was occasionally a healthy scratch. His $10.2 million, three-year contract is up in two years.

The Red Wings’ general manager, Steve Yzerman, stated that his team’s objective going into the 2024–25 NHL season is to improve defensively.

Impact players like defenseman Erik Gustafsson, goaltender Cam Talbot, and forward Vladimir Tarasenko were added by Detroit throughout the summer. Yzerman thinks the team is better going into the season.

On September 17, Yzerman declared, “We need to be a better defensive hockey club from top to bottom.” Our special teams must do well. We scored more goals last season and both of our special teams performed better. You have to be strong in certain areas, but we gave up too many to get to the playoffs. It’s acceptable to not have the greatest power play or

penalty-killing machine, but you had best have good secondary skills. Being a strong defensive hockey team is ultimately the key to long-term success.

Detroit concluded the previous campaign with a 41-32-9 record, just missing out on the postseason.

“I want to see improvement from our younger players individually as well as from our team as a whole in all the areas we’ve discussed,” Yzerman stated. “I think it’s positive as long as we’re moving in the right direction.”

Since the 2015–16 campaign, the Red Wings have not advanced to the postseason.

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson appointed forward Nick Foligno the 35th captain in the team’s history prior to the 2024–25 NHL season.

“We had Nick Foligno, Connor Murphy, and Seth Jones wearing letters (as alternate captains) last year.” We will stick with the same bunch. We’re going to make one change, and tonight we’re thrilled to announce that Nick Foligno will become the 35th captain in Blackhawks history, according to Davidson.

Following the news, Jones declared that Foligno was the ideal captain.
Jones declared, “He’s the ideal guy for the job for this team.” He’s an excellent leader, in my opinion, both on and off the ice. In addition to setting a terrific example, he is an excellent communicator.

Whether we’re performing well or they need to work on something, it doesn’t matter if he’s young or elderly. He always steps in to kind of bridge the gap, particularly between players and coaches.

On October 8, Chicago will take on the Utah Hockey Club on the road to begin the 2024–25 NHL season.
