Charlton Athletic star sends Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town and League One rivals veiled warning message

Nathan Jones has made his promotion goals clear, and one player believes the Addicks will continue to improve.
Charlton Athletic have turned eyebrows with their uncompromising performances this season, and Nathan Jones’ side are early contenders for promotion to the Championship at the end of the 2024/25 season.

That would be a far cry from the relegation struggle of the previous season, but four victories and one draw in the Addicks’ first seven League One games have established them as a difficult team to beat. At this early stage of the season, Charlton Athletic is fourth in the table, trailing only Wrexham, Birmingham City, and Barnsley. Huddersfield Town are only one point behind the London club in sixth position.
Jones’ side suffered a surprise home defeat to Blackpool last weekend, falling 2-1 at The Valley ahead of this weekend’s trip to Stevenage. Following the game, midfielder Conor Coventry said that Charlton Athletic still had room for growth. The player’s warning that there is’more to come’ from the current group will undoubtedly be noted by promotion opponents, given the Addicks’ impressive start to the League One season.

Coventry told the South London Press: “We just have to strike the correct balance of having that strong structure and being difficult to play against but still having some mobility at times. I believe we will get there. This is a work in progress. We’re still a new group, but I’m confident that we’ll find and achieve the perfect balance.I believe there is still much more to come. The gaffer is helping me a lot. I feel like I’m coming on and want to keep doing so. For me, team accomplishments take precedence above personal achievements.

“I just want to win every week; that’s my goal coming into each game. I feel

I feel like I’m progressing, but there’s so much more I want to see from my games.” Despite taking over a struggling Charlton Athletic last season, Jones has made no secret of his desire to challenge Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town for promotion this season. The Welshman previously enjoyed promotions with Luton Town.

When questioned about his priorities at the end of last season, the manager said, “Yes, we want to be promoted as soon as possible. However, we want to develop a football club that is sustainable, forward-thinking, and committed to achieving its objectives. We aim to restore this football club to its former glory.

“Part of that is getting promoted, and part of it is competing in the top leagues. That is what we want to do. Everything has a time limit, so I’m not going to guarantee that we’ll be promoted. We definitely want to do it again next season. Yes, we hope to finish as champions or among the top two.

“We have a goal here that we want to achieve something and we believe we’re going to do that.”
