A’s fans adorned their outfield fence with a slew of placards criticizing the organization for their egregious maltreatment of Oakland. The community was dragged through multiple feeble attempts to secure the franchise’s future there, only for Fisher and MLB to bully them into granting Fisher’s wish of eventually relocating to Las Vegas. In a farewell letter to fans, Fisher couldn’t even spell the name of the mountain peak where the great 1989 earthquake happened, which halted that year’s World Series, which Oakland eventually won. It’s a fitting finale to his tenure there. When the Rangers abandoned their previous identity as the Washington Senators, they relocated to the American League West, where the Athletics were one of MLB’s most powerful clubs. The A’s won not just the AL pennant, but also the World Series in each of the Rangers’ first three seasons in the division. Over the years, the teams have traded victories and defeats, with Texas typically attempting to catch up to Oakland and the radically different squads it has developed and had success with.
Marcus Semien is one of the most well-known players to have played for both the Athletics and the Rangers. Jonah Heim barely played for the A’s, but he is also a member of this family. Many well-known figures have worn the green and yellow, as well as the red and blue, including Elvis Andrus, Jose Canseco, Rubin Sierra, Bert Campaneris, and others. Even if the A’s maintain their current branding in whatever new home they move to in the coming years, it will not be the same.
In this series, both clubs are finishing up seasons in which they have already been eliminated from postseason contention.
