Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari “should have won” the Singapore Grand Prix, with the SF-24 car outpacing Lando Norris and McLaren at Marina Bay last weekend.
McLaren won for the fourth time in six races in Singapore, with Norris dominating from pole position, increasing the team’s advantage over reigning champions Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings to 41 points with six rounds of the F1 2024 season remaining. Fernando Alonso: Ferrari, not McLaren,’should have won’ In the Singapore GP, Norris won by 1.9 seconds less than he did in the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, where he won by 22.8 seconds, his most dominant performance of the season.
Norris’ straightforward victory came after the expected push from McLaren’s primary opponents failed to materialise, with Ferrari, who had pole positions in the previous two races in Italy and Azerbaijan thanks to Charles Leclerc, struggling in qualifying in Singapore.
Leclerc could only finish ninth on the grid after having his final lap of Q3 removed, while teammate Carlos Sainz started tenth after crashing in the final stages of qualifying.
Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll at Aston Martin: F1 2024 head-to-head battles Both drivers recovered on race day, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively, dealing a setback to Ferrari’s aspirations of winning the Constructors’ Championship, with the Scuderia currently trailing McLaren by 75 points.
Alonso finished seventh in Singapore, two seconds behind Sainz, after claiming his best performance since the Canadian Grand Prix in Baku in June.
Alonso said after the race that he pushed the Aston Martin to its limits in order to finish so close to a Ferrari at Marina Bay.
When asked if eighth place was the best outcome available, he replied, “Absolutely.
“Behind the top four teams, slightly ahead of Checo [Sergio Perez], so generally ninth and tenth are open.
“Today, placing eighth is better than our greatest hopes.
