JUST IN: ‘Outstanding’ Leeds star open to signing new deal but also has next move in mind

Junior Firpo is willing to prolong his stay at Leeds United and sign a new contract, TEAMtalk can reveal, but the in-form left-back knows where he wants to play next if he leaves Elland Road as a free agent.

The Dominican Republic international joined Leeds for £12.9 million (€15 million / $16.8 million) from Barcelona in the summer of 2021, with the LaLiga giants claiming a 25% stake of any subsequent transaction. Having signed a four-year contract at the time, it is set to expire at the end of the current season.

As a result, Firpo will be entitled to sign a pre-contract deal to move overseas beginning January 1, with a free-transfer departure from Leeds still an option for the 28-year-old.

DID YOU SEE SOMETHING? Illan Meslier advocates for a specific clause to be included in the new Leeds United contract.

However, while Firpo struggled at first in West Yorkshire, particularly during the club’s relegation from the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, he has thrived under Daniel Farke’s management and has proven to be one of the club’s most consistent performers over the calendar year.

We can now exclusively report that Firpo has given the green signal to Leeds that he would like to sign an extension to his present agreement, but wants to before you put pen to paper, you should comprehend the club’s aims and ambitions.

We can affirm, however, that Firpo is very pleased in England, namely in West Yorkshire, where the player and his young family are wonderfully settled.

However, much depends on Leeds’ aspirations, and he is waiting to see how the first few months of the new season go, as well as whether the team appears capable of launching another promotion push.

Junior Firpo’s future: where might the player wind up next?
Firpo has recently been linked with a return to one of his old teams, Real Betis, with the Andalusian side interested in signing him both this summer and the previous year.

He made 43 appearances for Los Verdiblancos between 2017 and 2019 before transferring to the Nou Camp, where he spent two seasons as a teammate of the great Lionel Messi before joining Leeds.

As a result, Firpo will be more focused on If he leaves Leeds, he may return to Spain, and a move to LaLiga is not out of the question if the two parties do not reach an agreement on an Elland Road extension.

Any decision on his future, however, will be put on hold for the next few weeks as the player waits to see how the first half of the season with Leeds goes.

However, since returning from injury at the beginning of the year, the player has thrived and now has 11 assists for club and country. After committing his international future to the Dominican Republic, the 28-year-old was recently utilized in an unusual striker role for the Caribbean country.

Farke understands the player’s value to Leeds.

Farke certainly understands the player’s worth, telling the Yorkshire Evening Post in July why he believes Firpo is a “outstanding” talent at this level.

“I’ve never hidden the fact that I believe Junior Firpo is an exceptional full-back at this level, with his experience, technical ability, and strength moving forward.

“He can assist and score. He demonstrated this again in this slightly more advanced part, which I believe suits him well. He is one of the more experienced members of my organization, and as a result, he plays an important role in my future plans. Of sure, he will be essential.
