September 26 – MLB postponed the games between the host Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets on Wednesday and Thursday due to Hurricane Helene approaching the southeastern United States, leaving the newly scheduled Monday doubleheader in Atlanta to determine all three National League wild-card spots.
The Mets (87-70) and Diamondbacks (88-71) are virtually tied for the second and third NL wild cards after Arizona defeated the San Francisco Giants 8-2 on Wednesday. The Braves (86-71) are one game behind New York and Arizona. Atlanta leads the season series versus New York, 6-5, so a potential tiebreaker might be in play on Monday as well. Both the Braves and the Mets would hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Diamondbacks.
Monday’s regular doubleheader between the Mets and Braves will begin at 1:10 p.m. local time, with the second game starting 40 minutes later.
According to MLB.com, Braves manager Brian Snitker stated, “We’re just going to have to analyze the situation in its whole, in terms of playoff implications. We’re going to have to be really fluid about the whole issue.” MLB’s four wild-card series are set to begin next Tuesday.
The Mets begin a three-game series against the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, while the Braves face the American League wild-card contender Kansas City Royals in a three-game matchup beginning Friday.
According to MLB.com, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza stated, “We need to move on to the next series.” We’re facing another extremely excellent club in Milwaukee, and we need to go out there and not just win the series, but also take care of business. That’s all we can do: control what we can. To close off the regular season, the Diamondbacks will play a three-game series against the San Diego Padres, who have already clinched an NL wild-card position.
As the hurricane approaches Florida’s Gulf Coast, heavy rain is expected in Atlanta on Wednesday and Thursday. Helene is anticipated to make landfall in Florida on Thursday as a Category 4 storm with gusts of more than 110 mph. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp proclaimed a state of emergency on Tuesday.
