JUST IN : Mavericks’ questionable decision to trade Josh Green is proving to be right call

Mavericks’ controversial choice to trade Josh Green is proving to be the right call. The Dallas Mavericks kicked off their offseason by moving Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks for Quentin Grimes.

The Mavericks needed to get go of Hardaway Jr. after a poor season, and both parties appeared to be ready for a fresh start. A few days later, the Mavericks completed another transaction. In exchange for Klay Thompson, the Mavericks handed Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets had already expressed interest in Green, and the Mavericks chose to move on from him in order to bring Thompson to Dallas.

Green’s deal is highlighted as’reason to detest’ Hornets summer.
Even though the Mavericks will miss Green’s hustle and excitement off the bench, it appears that they traded him at the appropriate time. Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report highlighted “Reasons to Love and Hate Every NBA Team’s 2024 Offseason,” and the reason he loathed the Hornets’ summer was due to Green’s contract.

Before last season, the Mavs signed Green to a three-year, $41 million contract extension, which begins this season. At the time, this seemed like a terrific deal for Green. After not showing much development last season, it appears like the Mavs may have let him go at the correct time.Mavericks' questionable decision to trade Josh Green is proving to be right call

Hughes discussed how Green isn’t big enough to consistently defend wings, and how advanced metrics don’t help him. Hughes praised Green’s shooting, passing, and energy, but the Mavs saw potential in these qualities to elevate him into an exceptional role player in exchange for Thompson’s guaranteed contributions. Dallas knows what Thompson will bring, and he should be a better overall match.

Furthermore, with the Mavs trade for Grimes, it appeared that Green’s future was in doubt. Grimes is an improvement over Green in almost every regard, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he ended up playing the same role Green did. Grimes is a better defender and could develop into a

Better shooter than Green, and the Mavericks got him for a steal.
Green’s addition to Charlotte’s young core should offer him a greater chance to showcase his skills because he’ll likely receive more minutes and a chance to start in the backcourt next to LaMelo Ball, but Hughes is still skeptical of the Hornets’ decision. If Thompson does not pan out and Green goes off for the Hornets, the Mavericks may come to regret this trade, but this appears improbable. Thompson, one of the greatest shooters of all time, will have plenty of opportunities while playing with Luka Doncic, and he is expected to make the starting lineup right immediately.

Green’s shotmaking in the corners and constant hustling should Help the Hornets, but the Mavs may have sold just before his extension became effective.
