Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever had an incredible season, but it ended with an 87-81 loss to the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the WNBA playoffs. Two days after being eliminated, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that Clark had been named the 2024 Rookie of the Year. The former Iowa Hawkeyes standout received this accolade after leading Indiana to its first postseason participation since 2016, shattering multiple records along the way.
Billie Jean King, a tennis star, took note of Clark’s most notable accomplishments in her maiden WNBA season and sent her a message on Saturday.
“What a first season!” King wrote about X. “Congratulations to Caitlin Clark, 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year. Her historical season encompasses: Single-season assist record. Single-season rookie scoring record. The first rookie in WNBA history to register a triple-double. “First rookie to make 100 three-pointers in a single season.”
King is one of the best female tennis players the world has ever seen. Born in Long Beach, California, the 80-year-old won 39 Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. She also broke the world record for the most Wimbledon titles, with 20.
Her professional career began in 1968 and concluded in 1990. King was admitted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. Clark finished her debut season starting all 40 games for the Fever. She averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists. After being chosen an All-Star, Clark led Team WNBA defeat Team USA before going on to win Olympic gold, becoming the only rookie to record ten assists in the All-Star Game.
