Deebo Samuel, a former South Carolina football star, says he will play for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. He missed last week due to an injury. Jordan Schultz, an NFL insider, revealed late Saturday night that former South Carolina football standout Deebo Samuel would return to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Samuel has a calf issue that kept him out of last week’s game. He is labeled as questionable on the team’s official injury report, but Schultz’s report indicates that the exceptional playmaker intends to return regardless of the designation.
In the 49ers’ first two games of the season, Samuel has 13 receptions for 164 yards. He also scored a rushing touchdown and had ten first downs.
It was a solid start to the 2024 season, and now that he is returning, he will try to make another Pro Bowl. As the 49ers are missing star running back Christian McCaffrey, Samuel’s job should be significant as long as he can withstand the physical demands. Deebo Samuel was one of the most electrifying South Carolina football players of all time.
Samuel holds the career record for most kickoff returns for touchdowns, having housed two kickoffs in 2017 on his only two opportunities of the season, and he is the only player in program history to have a kickoff return score in
three consecutive seasons. He scored once on special teams in 2016, and twice in 2017, and once in 2018. His four touchdowns came on just 26 total return opportunities, implying he had a greater than 15% chance of returning a kick for a touchdown between November 19, 2016 and November 3, 2018. #1 was an excellent receiver for Carolina as well. Samuel, who ranked in the top 11 among Gamecocks in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, appeared in less games than any other player on those lists except Sidney Rice. The Palmetto State product demonstrated his flexibility by scoring 7 touchdowns as a rusher (on just 25 total carries) and throwing for a couple of scores.
