BREAKING NEWS : Michigan honors Lions great Calvin Johnson

DETROIT: In Michigan, there’s a new holiday.

Additionally, one of the most recognizable professional athletes in state history is being honored.

The great Calvin “Megatron” Johnson of the Detroit Lions has been honored with a September 30 “Megatron Day” proclamation by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Johnson will also take the field with the Pride of the Lions at halftime of Detroit’s homecoming game against the Seattle Seahawks on “Monday Night Football,” an event that commemorates the team’s greatest players in history at Ford Field.

In order to set things up ahead of time, induction became official. Earlier today, she announced the news.

“One of the greatest wide receivers of all time and still rocking the coolest nickname in sports history,” Whitmer posted to X. “Megatron brought magic to the field every game.”

Johnson was given a private induction ceremony meal at Ford Field on Sunday night to commemorate his 39th birthday. He still maintains the Lions franchise records for career catches (731), receiving yards (11,619), and receiving touchdowns (83) throughout his nine-year career from 2007 to 2015. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.

Throughout his time with the Lions, he expressed his desire to be recognized by Detroit supporters and to leave a legacy of “grittiness.”

“You’ve got to work your tail off and I wanted people to see that in my game,” Johnson stated. That’s how I grew up. Literally, we were starting from scratch at [0–16]. Thus, you had to exert effort.”
