Lewis Hamilton, F1’s seven-time world champion, has revealed that he is still concerned about the world of motorsport and its inherent hazards. Despite the safe cocoon that contemporary technology provides, Hamilton is nonetheless concerned about his chances and thus treasures the exceptional times in his life.
The British driver is currently sixth in the Formula One season standings, with 174 points. And, with the Mercedes driver continuously testing the limits of his German gear, he has told The Times that he does not take any of this for granted.
“I pray every time before I race,” Hamilton revealed about his pre-race habit. “I pray for everyone’s safety.
“Motor racing is far less dangerous than it used to be but people still die,” he told me.
“So that’s why I’m sensitive of the time I spend with my family, especially my mother; is this the last time I get to hug her? Because you don’t know, nothing is guaranteed,” Hamilton explained. This season also marks a significant turning point in Hamilton’s career as he prepares for the huge move to Ferrari in 2025, which will bring an end to an era of dominance (and problems) with Mercedes, where he won six world championships.
This imminent move to Ferrari will be a new chapter, not just professionally, but also symbolically, as it comes at a time when he is being closely watched by fans of the sport.
Is he afraid of death, given his experience and sense of mortality? “No, I don’t.” Nonetheless, we’re going at breakneck rates. You must respect it.
“So that’s why I’m sensitive of the time I spend with my family, especially my mother; is this the last time I get to hug her? Because you really don’t know; nothing is sure.”
