Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins has signed a new deal, and there are high expectations for him to produce.
However, he signed his contract just a few days before the start of the NHL regular season. That gave the Bruins little time to prepare for their goaltender’s arrival. In reality, many expected that Swayman would simply hold out longer, forcing Joonas Korpisalo to start pressing forward.
Yesterday, it was announced that Swayman could play in tonight’s season opener against the Florida Panthers. After all, the Bruins would most certainly prefer him over Korpisalo. Having said that, it appears like Jim Montgomery went with Korpisalo tonight.
With Swayman probably rusty after his time off, it appears that this was just the best option for the squad, and you can’t blame them for adopting this approach. At the end of the day, you don’t want a rusty goaltender who can’t swing it for you.
Only time will tell when Swayman can make his Bruins debut this season. At this time, however, it is more likely that it will occur sooner than later. Hopefully, it does not disappoint, since he has 66 million reasons to play like a Vezina winner. Bruins fans will hope he does.
