ARLINGTON, Texas — The 2024 Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists were announced on Tuesday, and two Texas Rangers made the cut.
Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe and second baseman Marcus Semien were both named finalists in their respective positions.
One athlete from every position across both the American League and National League will be awarded the baseball glove-shaped trophy on Nov. 3. The tradition has been celebrated since 1957.
Each year, the Gold Glove is awarded to the players who have displayed spectacular defensive performances at each fielding position in both leagues.
Lowe is looking to claim back-to-back awards after winning his first Gold Glove last year. The first baseman totaled .995 in fielding percentage and 2.2 in ultimate zone rating this past season. Baltimore’s Ryan Mountcastle and Cleveland’s Carlos Santana are also in the running for the Gold Glove at the first baseman position.
Simien was not only a Gold Glove finalist last season, but he won in 2021. He recorded a .989 fielding percentage and prevented 14 runs this past season.
The winners are decided by vote. Managers and coaches from both leagues, along with metrics from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Defensive Index, which accounts for 25% of the total vote, decide the recipients. However, the voters are restricted from choosing their own players.
