After his side’s victory over Birmingham City at the weekend, Charlton manager Nathan Jones stated if supporters wanted to decide the team, he would “have his money and move somewhere else”.
Matty Godden’s second-half strike secured a 1-0 victory at the Valley on Saturday, putting the Addicks outside the League One play-off places on goal difference.
Former Southampton and Luton manager Jones told BBC Radio London that he had been harassed by his own fans during his team’s three-game losing streak.
“There has been a lot of noise this week. I was abused by my own fans the other day, who questioned our choices,” he stated.
“I’m really pleased of the coaching staff because we had to make big decisions, which we did since no one has gone after Birmingham like we have.
“I am experienced enough to know that you cannot panic or listen to noise.
“I have a message for the fans: if you want to get behind something, get behind it.
“We’re going to have some bad performances but hey, we’ve given them more good times than bad at the moment so we’re in good credit.”
“We bounced back, and I’m proud of the club.”
Charlton snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over the league-leading Blues on Saturday.
Jones took over the club in February and led them to a 16th place finish.
He urged fans to put their trust in him to administer the club and select the team, threatening to depart if this did not happen.
“People don’t know what happens through the week, people say ‘he should be playing’,” he went on.
“He may be injured, or anything may have happened during training.
“If people want to trust us and me to run the football club, that’s OK; if they [the supporters] want to pick their own teams, come in, I’ll take my money, and I’ll move somewhere else if necessary.
“I meet them [the players] every day, and we pick a side.
“Sometimes players let us down, and players let us down [on] Tuesday, completely let us down.
“I took responsibility for that but we bounced back today with a wonderful performance and I’m really proud of the football club.”
