Carlos Sainz Jr. may be eliminated from Formula One world championship contention in this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The 2024 Formula One schedule has five races remaining, beginning with race 20 of a record-breaking 24 this weekend at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Including the 26 points awarded in this 71-lap Mexico City Grand Prix at the 17-turn, 2.674-mile (4.303-kilometer) road course in Mexico City, Mexico, each driver still has 146 points available for the remainder of the season.
Race wins are worth 25 points each, with an additional point awarded for the fastest lap. In addition, two sprint races remain on the program in Brazil and Qatar, with race wins worth eight points apiece.
This means that after the Mexico City Grand Prix, there will be only 120 points available this season: 34 in Brazil, 26 in Las Vegas, 34 in Qatar, and 26 in Abu Dhabi.

Sainz stands in fifth place in the driver standings, 139 points behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. After the Mexico City Grand Prix, Sainz must maintain his lead of 119 points over Verstappen.
