Wrexham star Andy Cannon sends message to fans after late draw at Charlton Athletic

Wrexham came so close to winning all three points against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, but Andy Cannon’s goal was cancelled out in spectacular fashion.

Wrexham triumphed away against Rotherham United before drawing 0-0 at home against Huddersfield Town. Phil Parkinson was hoping for another away win as he led his team to Charlton Athletic, but it resulted in another tie.

Wrexham appeared to be closing in on three points as Andy Cannon scored in front of the traveling fans.

However, there was a late twist in the tale when Charlton was awarded a relatively cheap penalty for a Max Cleworth handball.

Matt Godden hit the net to give Charlton a 2-2 draw, leaving Wrexham distraught on the drive back.

Perhaps Wrexham’s game management should have been improved, but you can’t legislate against a substitute referee awarding a harsh penalty in the dying seconds. James McClean and Phil Parkinson have expressed their disappointment that Wrexham’s three-point lead at The Valley was reduced to one.

Wrexham fall from second to third place after Saturday’s draw, and midfielder Cannon has given a message to fans following the late heartbreak.

Goalscorer Cannon has resorted to Instagram to express his disappointment with the result, claiming that Wrexham “deserved all three.”

Cannon also acknowledged the travelling Wrexham fans, who supported the team admirably in

Wrexham have a highly good roster, and few players will start every game this season.

Parkinson will aim to rotate his players during the season, and Cannon faces competition in midfield.

Summer signings Ollie Rathbone replaced Cannon at Charlton, while new recruit Matty James was named on the bench.

Cannon is looking to establish that he belongs in the starting lineup more often than not, and he certainly demonstrated his abilities with a great goal against Charlton.

George Dobson and Elliot Lee appear to be reasonably solid in midfield, so Cannon will be hoping to keep Rathbone and James at bay.

Scoring goals surely helps, and Cannon can be proud of his contribution off the bench at Charlton, even if his goal did not prove to be the winner.
