New Charlton Athletic star opens up on Nathan Jones’ role in decision to make League One drop

Charlton Athletic completed an eye-catching coup this summer by signing former Luton Town midfielder Luke Berry.
Charlton Athletic had a busy summer as Nathan Jones rebuilt the squad during his first transfer window as manager. The Addicks were able to make several free agency acquisitions in the second half of last season to improve Jones’ roster, but their influence was limited. This was the first genuine opportunity for the Welshman to shape the group to his liking, and they took advantage of it.

The signing of midfielder Luke Berry was one of the most notable deals. He had just been released by Luton Town at the end of his contract and was lowered to League One to join the Addicks, despite having played in the Premier League last season.

Berry has spoken out about his decision to reunite with Jones at Charlton Athletic.

Speaking exclusively to Sky Bet on behalf of The72, the 32-year-old midfielder praised Jones’ contribution to his career and described the opportunity to work with him again as a ‘very easy’ one to accept. He said:

“I’ve been with Nathan Jones for six or seven seasons now, and he was extremely helpful when I first moved from Cambridge to Luton.” It wasLuke Berry joins the Addicks | Charlton Athletic Football Club

This is a significant deal for me.

“From that, we had a few promotions, and we did well.”I have learned a lot from him. So it was fairly easy for me to go back and work with him.” Impressive early on.
It’s easy to see why Berry has been a Championship regular in recent years, even getting a chance to play in the Premier League with Luton Town the previous time around.

Berry has not always been assured a starting spot at Charlton Athletic due to the club’s strong midfield depth. Nonetheless, the former Hatter has four goals in 13 League One outings from midfield.

He scored twice off the bench against Barnsley earlier this month, resulting in a 0–0 draw.

Jones’ team is still gelling and maturing, but it is believed that they will improve as the season unfolds as they seek promotion back to the Championship following a difficult few years.

The Addicks face Chelsea U21s in an EFL Trophy match in the middle of the week before starting their FA Cup campaign against Southend United the following weekend. They travel to Roots Hall to face a former EFL mainstay and are expected to win all three points. Berry will be eager to make an impression and establish his claim for a more regular starting berth, having scored some important goals from midfield in his early career at The Valley.
