Michael Carrick offered his verdict as he refused to blame Hackney’s red for Boro’s Coventry loss

Michael Carrick delivered his conclusion while refusing to credit Hackney’s red for Boro’s Coventry loss. Michael Carrick declined to blame Hayden Hackney’s red card for Middlesbrough’s defeat to Coventry City, lamenting his team’s poor start and finish to the game.

The Boro manager was understandably upset as his side lost 3-0 at the Riverside, in a game that saw Boro play with only ten men after Hackney was sent out for two bookable offences. Despite obvious displeasure with Thomas Bramall’s officiating during the game, the Boro manager declined to get involved in any controversy, insisting his team needed to look closer to home. “I’ve not watched it back,” Carrick said of Hackney’s red. “It is what it is, and there isn’t much point. The referee has given it. I’m not sure either way, but there isn’t much to say about it. He’s clearly disappointed. It’s what it is. Listen, I don’t want to sit here and discuss the referee’s decisions when we can do better.”I have to say, I was proud of the players’ reaction to the red card. I thought we handled that fairly well against a good squad. I won’t sit here and make excuses for the referee. We need to focus on ourselves.” Carrick was more concerned about their start in the game. and how everything eventually fell apart for them. Hackney’s red came as Boro began the game nervously and unable to establish their normal authority. The Boro midfielder received both bookings as a result of his own heavy touches, exemplifying the club’s poor start. But they actually had a good 15 minutes after the red card, with Jonny Howson’s comeback helping to calm them down. They then added extra momentum in the second half as they sought an equaliser and appeared to be on their way before being punished late on with two goals in six minutes to kill the game and seal the visitors’ victory.Middlesbrough player ratings vs Coventry City as there are 4s and 5s after heavy loss - Craig Johns - Teesside Live

Carrick summarized: “It was the beginning and end that really harmed us. To be honest, I think we handled the transition to ten men fairly effectively. We didn’t start especially well, were a touch jittery, and didn’t really settle into the game.

“We still had the first two opportunities, with Hayden and Riley creating a couple of good chances early on. But we didn’t start well and eventually dropped to 10. I think we handled going down fairly well. However, the first two goals are underwhelming.

“I think we handled a lot of what they threw at us after the red, but the two goals are quite clear and aren’t due to being a man down; they’re just two goals that we could have done better with. As the game progressed, we appeared to be in a good position and were about to re-enter the game when we gave away a very straightforward goal. In the end, that matters.”Michael Carrick refuses to blame red card as he pinpoints Middlesbrough's biggest problem - Teesside Live

He went on to say that, particularly at the opening of the game, “We just didn’t quite find our level; it wasn’t quite there. It wasn’t a lack of effort or attitude; we simply weren’t there and didn’t get into the game. However, we still have the first

In the game, there were two good breakaway opportunities.

“But, if anything, I thought we played better after going down to ten men. It kind of forced us to calm down and play a little. Ultimately, the second objective is the one that kills us. It is possible for the game to come to an end. It’s more what happened before that that annoys me, and that’s what we’ll have to work on.”

Boro suffered a double blow on the day, losing Rav van den Berg and Ben Doak to injuries, with the Boro manager also preferring to start Luke Ayling over Anfernee Dijksteel. He revealed before the game that Van den Berg had a knee injury, whilst Doak’s was more fatigue-related and not considered significant.

When asked for an update on Van den Berg, he responded: “Rav felt his knee in training after twisting it. We’re not sure about it yet, but we’ll have

To wait and see. Ben is suffering from weariness, which has been building up after playing a lot of football after a few months off. This causes little hamstring strain.

“Hopefully it’ll be a few days, but it’s not serious by any means. Luke and Anf were another difficult decision. Both are good players who can contribute equally to the team. It’s one of those decisions you have to make.
