The College Football Playoff Selection Committee has announced its second set of rankings, with Clemson football moving up to No. 20 after a 24-14 victory against Virginia Tech.
Starting at No. 23 in last week’s CFP rankings, the Tigers’ recent ascent highlights their slim but perhaps playoff-bound route. ESPN’s Playoff Predictor currently gives Clemson a 17% probability of making the CFP, which increases to 46% if they win out. They’re also assigned a 19% probability of making the ACC Championship, however Clemson’s participation in the 12-team postseason is contingent on Miami or SMU slipping up in the coming weeks.
The new playoff structure will include the five highest-ranked conference champions as well as seven additional teams, giving top-performing programs more opportunities to advance to the playoffs. Clemson is now trailing Miami, the ACC’s top team, but an at-large bid remains possible. As they prepare to face Pittsburgh this week, followed by games against Wake Forest and Syracuse, Clemson’s hopes depend on preserving their momentum while banking on rivals’ defeats to help them climb.
