Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced Tuesday night that Josh Smith, an infielder, will receive the American League Silver Slugger Award at the utility position in 2024.
Louisville Slugger’s annual award celebrates the top offensive players at each position in the American and National Leagues, as voted on by MLB managers and coaches. This is Smith’s first career Silver Slugger, and the first time a Texas Ranger has won the award in the utility position, which was added in 2022. His accomplishment also marks the third straight year that a Rangers player has claimed a Silver Slugger, following accolades garnered.
Nathaniel Lowe will play first base in 2022, followed by Corey Seager at shortstop and Marcus Semien at second base in 2023.
Smith, who turned 27 in August, set career highs in numerous offensive statistics in 2024, including a.258 batting average, 13 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 30 doubles. He was seventh in the AL in times hit by pitch (18) and was among the league’s best in doubles and on-base percentage.
Smith started in five positions during a career-high 149 games, with the most appearances coming at third base and shortstop. Smith started 69 games at third base, filling in for Josh Jung.
