The Chicago Cubs made their second trade on Wednesday, this time for a new catcher. The Chicago Cubs have been very active on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Jed Hoyer and company completed a trade with the Cleveland Guardians for relief pitcher Eli Morgan, aiming to bolster a bullpen that struggled during the 2024 season. Now the Cubs have completed a second transaction.
According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, Chicago has acquired catcher Matt Thaiss from the Los Angeles Angels. To create room on the roster for their new backstop, pitcher Trey Wingenter was designated for assignment.
The 29-year-old will have the opportunity to win a role with the Cubs, most likely as Miguel Amaya’s primary backup behind the plate.
Thaiss played 57 games for the Angels in 2024. He hit two home runs and had 16 RBIs while slashing.204/.323/.299.
Fans should not expect him to come in and make a significant impact at the plate. With more playing time, he might be able to swing the bat better, although his numbers were poor last season. In 2023, he played 95 games with Los Angeles, hitting nine home runs and driving in 31 runs. That season, he had a slash line of.214/.319/.340, which doesn’t
Move the needle a lot.
Still, the Cubs met their aim of improving the catcher position, which they set out to achieve this winter. Fans will now sit back and hope that Chicago makes an impact in free agency.
