BREAKING NEWS : Birmingham City Schools move up two points on state report card

Birmingham, Alabama (WBRC) – Birmingham City Schools is making considerable progress. They achieved a C on the state report card, two points higher than the previous year, and more than 40% of schools in the district improved their letter grades.

BCS officials are pleased with the development, which includes three schools moving from a F to a C and an increase in the number of A-rated schools. Oxmoor Valley Elementary and South Hampton have improved from C to B.

Another accomplishment that Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan is pleased of is the reduction in absenteeism in the system. Absenteeism was approximately 30% two years ago, but it is currently less than half that. According to Sullivan, these are the largest amount of pupils the district has seen in more than 30 years.

They do, however, stress the need for additional work. They intend to build on this achievement with a new strategic plan, the dedication of teachers and staff, and the support of parents and students. Last year, 15 schools received a F letter grade. This year, we cut that number in half to seven. While 7 schools is still far too many, Dr. Sullivan’s objective for next year is to have no schools receiving a letter grade of F. “I’m convinced it will happen because of the hardworking instructors in our education system, together with our children.
